We watch for three things: what they agree on, what they ignore, and what they cover differently. The first tells you what matters. The second, what might. The third, why thoughtful minds see differently.
No ads. No third-party trackers. No clickbait. Just signal.
The financial press produces more than any single reader can follow. Reuters publishes thousands of articles daily. The Economist, FT, WSJ each have their own perspective on the same events. Reading across all of them is impossible. Reading only one is to inherit its blind spots.
The Signal was built on a simple observation: when something truly matters, multiple outlets converge on it. When only one outlet notices, it's worth knowing — even if you don't yet know why.
Most news products optimize for engagement: more articles, more headlines, more time on site. The Signal optimizes for the opposite — less, but better selected.
What you get here is not depth on any single story — for that, read the original outlet. What you get is the shape of the day in one glance: what the world's leading outlets agree on, what they argue about, and what most of them missed. A balanced, unweighted view of the economic landscape, without anyone's editorial slant pulling you in one direction.
We trade depth for breadth, and detail for perspective. It's a different kind of reading — one that gives you the market's big picture in the time it takes to drink your morning coffee. And it's free.
Each day, The Signal pulls headlines from ten leading economic outlets:
A clustering algorithm groups similar stories. Three categories emerge:
Stories covered by three or more outlets. These are the day's anchors. When Reuters, Bloomberg, and FT all lead with the same Fed announcement, that's a signal worth noticing.
Stories covered by only one or two outlets. Often dismissed, occasionally prescient. The Signal surfaces them so they don't disappear into noise.
Stories covered with notably different framings across outlets. The same event, two readings. Both worth thinking about.
We track outlets across the political spectrum — from The Guardian on the left to The Wall Street Journal and The Telegraph on the right. The Signal isn't about taking sides. It's about showing where thoughtful minds see differently.
The algorithm is mechanical. The selection of which categories to surface, and how to present them, is editorial. We try to be transparent about both.
The Signal operates on three timeframes:
Every weekday morning, Monday through Friday. The day's signals, freshly curated.
Saturday mornings. A brief one-page recap of the week. What signals dominated. What quietly grew. What divided. Read in five minutes.
First Monday of each month. A longer, more reflective issue. Themes that emerged. Voices that mattered. Quiet signals revisited. What was missed. Available as a downloadable PDF.
Together, they form a complete picture: the day's pulse, the week's rhythm, the month's narrative.

This is a solo project, run independently, with no funding or institutional backing. The intent is simple: to build the kind of economic briefing I wanted to read.

This site is, in some ways, an experiment. The clustering algorithm sometimes misses connections that a human would catch. The "quiet signals" framework is imperfect — sometimes outlets are quiet because a story isn't important, not because it's prescient. The monthly retrospectives sometimes find that past signals didn't pan out at all.
We don't hide these limitations. The point isn't perfect prediction — it's better attention.
Some inspiration is owed. Semafor pioneered the "news-as-signal" framing in modern journalism. Stratechery showed what single-voice curation could be. The Economist and FT remain the gold standards of restrained editorial tone. The Signal borrows from all of them, but tries to do something they don't — to read across outlets, not from any one.
